Improved energy efficiency and environmental performance have become key drivers to improve vessel design and operations. We view innovation as an important tool for offering the best possible service to our customers. We are working on initiatives to build a more sustainable company by improving our technology, operations and business practices.

SAVER – Seaspan Action on Vessel Energy Reduction

In 2009, Seaspan started the SAVER initiative. The goal is to promote a culture that has a greater focus on energy efficiency of our fleet and its operations. The specific aim of the SAVER initiative is to reduce the level of CO2 emissions from our fleet by reducing fuel oil consumption.

With this in mind, we have developed the New Panamax SAVER 10,000. This ship pushes the limits of cost effectiveness and client acceptability with respect to maximizing the inclusion of the most feasible emission mitigation and energy efficiency measures available today.

When we compare the SAVER 10,000 to a similar size vessel built in the last five years, it is approximately 30% more efficient when compared to the number of 10,000 TEU containers per ton of fuel per day at 18 knots. Based on this balanced approach to the design, our SAVER 10000 vessel was nominated as a candidate for the Nor-Shipping Award, Next Generation Ship Award.
